Degu Cage Bar Spacing and Materials
Bar spacing and materials are easy to overlook because product listings emphasize overall cage size. For degus, both directly affect escape risk, injuries and how long the enclosure remains secure.
Bar spacing
As an orientation, Deguhilfe Süd recommends no more than 1 cm (0.4 in) for young animals and generally no more than 2 cm (0.8 in) for adults. Measure the widest clear opening, including corners, doors and joins. If age or body size is uncertain, use the smaller limit.
The cage planner checks the entered spacing against the selected age group. It cannot detect flexible bars, poorly aligned doors or larger openings around accessories, so inspect those separately.
Chew-resistant construction
Reachable plastic can be destroyed quickly and may leave sharp fragments. Prefer robust metal framing, securely fixed mesh and solid shelves made from suitable, replaceable material. Cover or remove protruding wire ends, splintered edges and narrow foot traps.
Solid floors instead of wire floors
Wire-only floors do not provide a comfortable continuous running surface and can create foot and fall hazards. Full solid levels add usable area and divide the height. They still need regular inspection because urine, moisture and chewing can damage surfaces.
Final safety check
- Measure every opening with the cage assembled.
- Check door gaps while pressing and pulling on the frame.
- Make sure fasteners cannot be loosened or chewed from inside.
- Remove sharp edges and unstable accessories.
- Recheck the cage after cleaning or rearranging it.
