Degu Cage Requirements: Complete Setup Checklist

A suitable degu enclosure is more than a tall cage sold for small animals. Use this checklist before buying, building or remodeling a habitat, then recheck it after assembly.

1. Start with the social group

Degus are social animals, and the cited care organizations recommend compatible pairs or small groups. Plan the permanent enclosure and its resources around the intended group rather than treating solitary housing as a space-saving option. Introductions, separation and group conflict need individual planning; contact an experienced rescue or veterinarian when behavior or health is a concern.

2. Measure the usable interior

Use internal width, depth and height. Product dimensions can include a stand, wheels, handles or frame that provide no living space. 3. Add full solid levels

In this site’s planning method, the base and full solid levels provide continuous usable area and divide tall enclosures into shorter zones. Small shelves are useful features but do not count as full levels in the calculator. Secure ramps, bridges, ledges and level openings so they cannot shift or leave long open fall routes. 4. Check materials and ventilation

Degus are persistent chewers. Use robust construction, secure fasteners and solid walking surfaces. Inspect reachable plastic, coatings, splinters, sharp wire ends and narrow traps rather than assuming every included accessory is suitable. Wire-only floors are not a continuous solid surface.

5. Provide digging, resting and resource areas

  • A solid base with suitable material deep enough to support digging behavior
  • More than one accessible hide or nest area for the group
  • Fresh water and hay positioned where they can be checked easily
  • Safe chewing material and varied enrichment
  • Routes that do not allow one animal to block every essential resource

Choose bedding and nesting materials from current degu-specific guidance. Avoid dusty, scented or string-like materials unless an experienced degu source has confirmed their suitability.

6. Check the wheel, dust bath and accessories

7. Choose a suitable location

Place the enclosure on a stable base in a well-ventilated, low-humidity area away from draughts, direct sun, radiators and other heat sources. Protect the animals from unsupervised access by other pets and young children. Avoid relying on a sunny window for daylight because the enclosure can overheat.

8. Make inspection and cleaning practical

Doors should allow safe access without creating an escape route. Water, hay, bedding, levels and the wheel must be easy to inspect. Spot-clean soiled areas and remove spoiled food as needed. Full-cleaning schedules vary between reputable guides and depend on enclosure size, group size and soiling; avoid leaving the habitat dirty, but do not present one interval as universal.

After cleaning or rearranging the enclosure, recheck every latch, edge, opening, ramp and attachment. Where appropriate, retaining a small amount of clean familiar bedding can reduce an abrupt loss of familiar scent.

Final pre-move-in check

  • Internal measurements have been recorded and checked.
  • The widest bar or door gap has been measured after assembly.
  • Floors and full levels are solid, stable and reachable.
  • No long open fall route remains through the layout.
  • Doors and fasteners cannot be pushed open from inside.
  • No sharp, unstable, easily trapped or reachable unsafe component remains.
  • Water, hay, hides and movement routes are available to the group.
  • The location has airflow without direct sun, heat or draughts.
  • A secure carrier and a plan for safe temporary housing are available.

What must be inside a degu cage?

The cited guides consistently call for solid surfaces, suitable bedding or digging material, places to hide or nest, water, hay, chewing opportunities and exercise or enrichment. The exact layout should leave usable movement routes rather than filling every surface with accessories.

Are cages marketed for rats, chinchillas or ferrets automatically suitable?

No. Category labels do not confirm internal space, bar gaps, floor construction, chew resistance or fall protection. Check the assembled product against the measurements and requirements on these pages.

Can a single degu use a smaller permanent cage?

Permanent solitary housing should not be used as a shortcut around group-space planning. A lone animal, medical separation or a difficult introduction needs case-specific advice and suitable temporary arrangements.
