Degu Cage Size & Setup: A Practical UK Guide

A degu cage needs more than floor area. Degus climb, run, dig, chew and live socially, so usable height, safe levels and a thoughtful layout matter just as much as the headline dimensions.

A useful minimum starting point

The Blue Cross recommends a metal cage at least 90 cm deep, 60 cm wide and 120 cm tall for a group of two to five degus. Treat that as a minimum starting point, not a target to squeeze down. More usable space makes it easier to add separate feeding points, hides, a large solid-surface wheel and routes that let cage-mates avoid one another.

Materials and floors

Choose a well-ventilated metal enclosure because degus readily chew plastic and wood. Cover wire floors and shelves with solid surfaces to reduce the risk of foot injury. Check every ramp, door and connector for sharp edges or gaps, and position shelves so a fall cannot continue through the full cage height.

Plan the cage in zones

  • Feeding: hay available at all times, with more than one feeding point for a group.
  • Rest: multiple enclosed hides and nesting material.
  • Movement: connected shelves, solid ramps and a suitably sized solid wheel.
  • Natural behaviour: a deep digging area, safe branches and chew materials.
  • Bathing: a stable sand bath offered regularly and removed if it becomes soiled.

Observe how your own group uses the space. Persistent chasing, blocked access to food or a degu repeatedly hiding can indicate that the layout or social situation needs attention. Seek advice from an experienced exotics vet or qualified welfare organisation when behaviour changes suddenly.
